Running Apparel
Many runners like to think of running as a sport that requires very little money. There is no bike or kayak to buy, no alpine skis, no snowboard, nothing that will break the bank if you want to take up the sport.

While running is relatively low cost, if you get into it in a serious way, there is more to it than simply throwing on a pair of sneakers and heading out the door.
In chapter 1 we discussed how to choose a pair of running shoes, so in this chapter we will limit ourselves to a look at what is available in running apparel.
Running gear isn't so much about how you look as about how you feel. Comfort and function are what people are looking for today in sports apparel. Today the term actually is technical apparel, and it‘s what you see most runners wearing at every race.
Running Socks
The cotton t-shirt is becoming a thing of the past when it comes to running. People are being trained to stay away from cotton because when it gets wet it stays wet. That even applies to socks. Today runners are wearing synthetic socks that are light and wick moisture away from their feet. Many companies have their own special names for their fabrics, like Coolmax or Dri-Fit but generally running socks are made of some type of polypropylene blend. Running socks also have extra cushioning in all the right places and smooth seams that won't irritate your foot.
Running Shorts
Synthetic fibers are the material of choice in running shorts. These materials wick moisture away from the skin into the outer layer where it evaporates. Short shorts have always been popular for their freedom of movement but many of today's shorts are getting longer. In fact, some of them are baggy and almost the length of basketball shorts. Many are made of stretchy materials. Today most shorts also have one or two tiny pockets where you can stash your gel, money or keys.
Running Shirts:
T-shirts are now post-race clothing, not worn by runners during events. That's because cotton is out and shirts that wick away moisture are in. A quality running shirt will keep you dry and cool in hot weather. While technical clothing is more expensive than cotton, it will also last for a long time. And, you will be pleasantly surprised how comfortable it is the first time you give it a try.
Running Outerwear
Tights are good to run in on cool days and also to wear over your shorts before a race to keep your muscles warm. If you plan on running in the late fall and winter you will also want to buy technical outwear--a jacket that is warm but also breathable. You are going to be toasty warm inside and you don't want to be soaked with sweat. You will want a hat and gloves for winter running as well.
